The Last Moment Between Us

A frozen moment by the sea:
The wind playing with your hair
Clouds strewn across a restless sky
Your hands slack by your sides
And how I wanted to take them
How I wanted to pull you close
and never let you go
How I could already feel
the knife of separation
the distance yawning open
And no matter how hard I reached for you
there was still an ocean between us
You were silent
Gazing out at an unforgiving sea
And all I could think
Was how I had loved you
And I still did
And maybe I always would

When you turned and left
something
inside
me
broke

All I could do was whisper
“Please,
please, come back.”
