I stood on an empty stage
and began to speak

And the people listened
They did not turn away
They did not laugh or spit
as I was so afraid they would

The ‘you’ from too many poems
Sat in the second row
And I did not choke
I did not suffocate
There was enough air
for both of us to sit comfortably
in the room

My tongue
Did not trip over the words
I did not crack my knuckles
Or bite my lip
I stood
s t i l l

I was trembling
But I was
Not afraid

I think
I made it
